A veteran shot himself this morning in the parking deck of a Veteran's Administration building in Birmingham.
The injury wasn't life-threatening, and officials say they don't know whether the shooting was accidental or intentional.
The incident happened after 9:30 a.m. at the Birmingham VA Clinic in the 700 block of 24th Street. VA spokesman Jeff Hester said the shooting happened in the parking deck.
The veteran, he said, apparently had a gun in his car. After he shot himself in the wrist, he went back into the clinic and brought the gun with him. Guns are prohibited on federal property.
Hester said VA police immediately confiscated the weapon, and on-site medical personnel treated him until Birmingham paramedics arrived. He was taken to UAB Hospital.
The investigation is ongoing, Hester said. – Alabama
