Every year since her husband’s death, Gold Star wife, Rachel Richardson, has been invited to attend the 3rd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division’s Ball. The wife of fallen soldier, Jonathan “Rich” Richardson, who was killed in Afghanistan in a 2010 insurgent attack, said that she likes to attend the balls because, “They are like my family so I love going to talk to my heroes and meet new ones,” she wrote in her video in which she invited Army Ranger veteran and celebrity Mat Best.
Mat Best responded to the invitation with his own video reply. I was sent an emotional video message asking me to a 101st Airborne Unit Ball from a Gold Star Wife. The amount of people that supported her was truly amazing and compelled me to respond” with the following video response: He displayed his message on cards written beforehand.
“Best, the president of Article 15 Clothing and one of the stars/writers/producers of the veteran-made zombie-apocalypse-comedy "Range 15," began by noting his busy schedule, including a recent overseas trip to screen "Range 15" for deployed troops. But just when it appeared she was heading for the brush-off: He accepts her invitation.”
‘He loved his job’, said Richardson’s widow Rachel of her husband. "When people ask me about him, the first word that comes to mind ... is that he was the biggest smart-ass I've ever known," she said Thursday night, discussing Sgt. Jonathan J. "Rich" Richardson, who died in 2010 in a suicide-bomb blast in Khowst province, Afghanistan. "He was very intelligent. He loved his job, and he was very, very good at it.
"He stood up for what he believed in. He was very passionate about the Army. ... I got to see a side of him that not many other people saw. His softer side, his sweet side. He was a very affectionate, loving person. ... There's so many ways to describe him, there's just not enough time."
